    Howdy all,

Been a while since I've posted. My portfolio website is up and running and if anyone has any spare time I'd be grateful for any feedback.

Not bad all in all...Everything is there that needs to be.

My advice on the reel is to make it shorter. Instead of cutting a lot of the same 3,4, 5 things just take the best stuff from that and boil it down to 90 seconds or less.

Also, try to get some film on your reel...I couldn't spot any but then again I stopped watching it when it started to look lke I havd seen it all.

    Good Luck

I also had the feeling of having seen enough, anround the 40% mark, but then i thought that might be because I'm not a potential employer, but a bloke who has to leave for work in 15 minutes, who still hasn't ironed his shirt. If I was thinking of hiring you I would probably want to see that much, and then some scenes fom some of your shorts, or complete commercials (I thought the commercials bit was put together very well), and I see you can see clips from the shorts on the next page (don't have time now), but no commercials?

    hello

I agree, I would cut out a lot of the
"man running around" shots which look like
padding, and dont indicate any director/ or editor
skills - all they do is to say Look I have a video camera and have used it with my friends.

I too couldnt be bothered to watch more than about half of it.

You have some interesting shots. Cut out ALL the less interesting stuff - you know which bits they are.
Keep in the stuff with crowds, special effects and apparent drama, and the well lit, nicely shot bits. Keep the bits you are REALLY proud of and that reflect what you feel your style to be.
    The rest should simply go.

The showreel as it stands gives the impression to me that you have made about 4 films, and this is a compilation of the best bits of each one. I think thats a mistake. Dont sell yourself short, make it look like you have been in more productions than 4.

What are you trying to show with your showreel? Editing skills? Or director Skills?
This looks like an editor promo.
Decide and customise it specifically for that purpose. Create 2 if need be.

    good luck.

Thanks for all your advice. One of the things I'm going to do is to separate the Short film reel and the Commercial reel so you can view them independently from each other. That way it'll be easier to view what you want.

I'll look into trimming down the short film section but for now I'm currently working on the Motion Graphics section.

I'm looking to create an addition page just for the commercials so the best of the best can be viewed independently.

My reel is focused more around Editing than it is Directing, but at the end of the day I want to cover a range, again, such as Motion Graphics and 3D.

Anyway, thanks for all the comments guys.

nice clean looking website, keep it that way. I'd hate to see a Flash intro.

    the reel:

yep, I got to about 50% and switched off.

selling your skills as an editor - show that you can make more than two cuts. most of that reel is a jumble of images randomly assembled. it doesn't show me that you know your L-cut from your elbow.

selling your skills as a director - show that you can direct scenes. the more memorable, the better. (memorable = contraversial, usually)

why would I want to employ you? how are you different to the thousands of other directors and editors out there?

    Question

Would anyone be able to give me an example of a strong editing reel? Any online porfolio's you could point me in the direction of? any of your own showreels that may relate?

I'd like to see an example of a decent edit reel so I can get a greater idea as to where I may of gone wrong.

    Cheers.

look at how much trailers and adverts pack into (sometimes less than) 30 seconds.
